Addis Ababa,(AMECO)-Addressing deep-seated regional isolation and historical lack of equitable transport infrastructure while reflecting on the current socio-economic landscape of Amhara and beyond in an exclusive interview with Ameco, the prime minister, Dr Abiy Ahmed, outlined a major infrastructural rollout. To resolve this systemic challenge, civil planners implemented a coordinated logistical response, simultaneously activating 61 distinct road construction projects to tackle geographical barriers and security disruptions.
This engineering initiative successfully doubled total road coverage across the region from 2,000 kilometres to 4,500 kilometres. To address broader transit and economic mobility needs, the administration complemented road construction with infrastructural solutions, including a new regional airport in Debre Markos, major expansion of the Bahir Dar aviation terminal into Ethiopia’s second-largest hub, and the initiation of the Awash-Kombolcha railway project.
Highlighting the measurable success of these physical initiatives against adversity, Abiy stated: “The total road coverage in the Amhara region was around 2,000km. It has now more than doubled to 4,500km.” Underscoring the resilience of the development agenda, he further noted: “Despite challenges, robberies and disruptions, we have more than doubled road construction.”
