Addis Ababa, (AMECO) – The United States and Ethiopia have pledged to expand their military partnership, targeting rising security threats across East Africa during high-level talks in the capital.
General Dagvin Anderson, head of US Africa Command (Africom), met with Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, chief of Ethiopia’s national defence force, to align strategies against regional militant networks.
Discussions centred on curbing extremist activities in neighbouring Somalia, specifically joint counter-insurgency operations directed at al-Shabaab and Isis cells.
Moving past routine joint manoeuvres, Anderson highlighted plans to bolster institutional capacity across East African armed forces. He pointed to the co-hosted African Logistics and Communications Symposium in Addis Ababa as evidence of a shift toward broader structural and technological collaboration.
Major General Teshome Gemechu, lead director of foreign military relations for the Ethiopian forces, characterized the session as a constructive step forward for bilateral security cooperation.
US Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Massinga and senior defence delegates from both nations were also in attendance.
