Bahir Dar, (AMECO)- The Amhara Regional Council’s standing committee on legal and justice affairs has commended security and judicial bodies for expanding legal access and reintegrating disarmed combatants.

Reviewing the 2025/26 performance reports of five core government institutions in Bahir Dar, Asnakech Haile, representative chair of the committee, said peaceful dialogue and combatant surrenders had significantly bolstered regional stability and enabled the successful execution of the seventh general election.

The parliamentary review praised the regional supreme court for launching digital services and establishing customary community courts to accelerate justice. It also credited the Peace and Security Bureau with facilitating job creation for former insurgents who accepted peace offers, while noting state improvements in asset recovery and civil litigation handling.

However, the committee instructed the regional police commission to intensify measures against illegal firearms smuggling, highway banditry, and kidnapping syndicates, while demanding improved welfare support for officers wounded or killed in the line of duty. The peace bureau was urged to modernise its intelligence-gathering systems and tighten controls on media infiltration.

The Justice Bureau was directed to launch targeted anti-corruption investigations into high-vulnerability institutions, strengthen multi-agency operations against human trafficking, and enforce strict human rights standards across correctional facilities—specifically for women, children, and elderly inmates.

To complete the overhaul, the supreme court was ordered to eliminate substantial case backlogs carried over into the new fiscal year and expand oversight of lower-tier courts, while the regional president’s office was tasked with ensuring grassroots administrative grievances are resolved swiftly.
