Addis,Ababa, (AMECO) The severe civil and physical destruction caused by the northern conflict formed a key focus of discussion when the prime minister, Dr Abiy Ahmed, sat down with Ameco for an exclusive interview examining current milestones and future prospects throughout the Amhara region and wider areas. Utilising the Pretoria agreement as a critical political solution, the administration successfully silenced the sound of bullets to redirect state resources toward comprehensive post-war recovery and social stabilisation.
To heal war-torn communities, the government executed a massive 14bn birr reconstruction programme. This systematic response completed over 1,408 projects, rebuilding 459 schools, 210 health facilities and 358 water delivery systems, alongside repairing critical power and telecommunications infrastructure. Furthermore, the state directly compensated looted financial institutions in Kombolcha and successfully managed the mass resettlement and reintegration of displaced populations.
Highlighting the tangible benefits of the peace accord, Abiy stated: “What the Pretoria agreement achieved for Tigray, Amhara, Afar and Ethiopia as a whole was silencing the sound of bullets so we could focus on development.” Refuting narratives of regional detriment, he firmly emphasised: “It is hard to believe that an agreement harming Amhara interests would be executed by these people.”
Leveraging the Pretoria peace accord to resolve active conflict, the government implemented a 14bn birr reconstruction framework that successfully repaired over 1,400 civic, educational, health and utility projects whiles tabilising war-affected communities.
