Addis Ababa (AMECO) – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called on global leaders to integrate resilience into governance systems before crises strike, addressing world leaders at the 18th Brics summit in New Delhi.
Speaking during the opening sessions of the summit—held under the central theme “Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”—Abiy took part in discussions focused on creating inclusive global governance and strengthening multilateral cooperation. Marking the 20th anniversary of the Brics alliance, participating leaders emphasized plans to develop a more organized, equitable, and inclusive framework for international collaboration in the coming years.
Detailing how proactive system-building has enabled Ethiopia to withstand major challenges, Abiy pointed to key domestic initiatives that have served as structural buffers. Chief among these was Ethiopia’s transition from wheat import dependency to complete domestic wheat self-sufficiency, alongside the establishment of local pharmaceutical and medical supply manufacturing integrated into national preventative health policy.
Abiy also highlighted Ethiopia’s digital transformation efforts and the construction of the Medemer Artificial Intelligence University, designed to address the growing research and innovation demands of the African continent. He expressed Ethiopia’s readiness to deepen practical partnerships with Brics member nations across these technology and development sectors.
On the sidelines of the summit, Abiy held bilateral talks with heads of state from Brics member and partner countries. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in investment, regional affairs, technology transfer, capacity building, tourism, mining, and joint diplomatic strategy leading towards the COP32 climate summit.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Ethiopia’s broader infrastructure drive—including the development of a mega world-class airport—positions the country to play a leading role in Brics discussions on expanding continental and international trade connectivity.
