Addis Ababa (AMECO)— Social sector institutions across Ethiopia’s Amhara region have commemorated national “Day of Diversity” (የኅብር ቀን) through practical community initiatives, combining blood donation drives, school supply distributions, and communal meal sharing to foster regional cohesion
Speaking at the launch of the events, Dr Mulunesh Desie, social sector coordinator with the rank of deputy head of region, emphasised that national unity and social cohesion must be demonstrated through tangible mutual support rather than abstract symbolism.
Dr Mulunesh described the day as an opportunity to honour cultural diversity while reinforcing shared values that unite citizens across regional and social divides.
“Standing together in unity helps us act as fire to foes and as iron to friends,”Dr Mulunesh said, using a traditional idiom to describe collective strength. She added that solidarity must become a lived, everyday principle rather than a single annual observance.
The commemoration focused on practical interventions aimed at easing local economic hardship and supporting vulnerable youth. Regional authorities distributed exercise books and educational materials to school children, while organising public meal-sharing events and blood donation drives across local institutions.
Birtukan Sisay, head of the Amhara Region Women, Youth and Social Affairs Bureau, said the practical initiatives were designed to translate national values into immediate civic action.
Birtukan noted that communal meal sharing renews local networks of mutual assistance, while the provision of school supplies provides essential academic grounding for young children. She urged communities, local government bodies, and social organisations to maintain these collective relief efforts as a foundation for long-term peace and institutional trust.
