Bahir Dar, (AMECO) — Authorities in Ethiopia’s Amhara region restored 1,043 historical heritage sites and recovered 18 stolen artifacts during the past fiscal year, regional chief Arega Kebede told the regional council.
Addressing the council’s 12th regular session, Arega Kebede presented an annual performance report outlining achievements in regional cultural conservation and tourism infrastructure.
Regional authorities conducted risk assessments on 250 immovable heritage sites to classify structural damage before carrying out maintenance and restoration across 1,043 items and locations.
The administration also recovered 18 looted artifacts, returning them to public custody as part of anti-trafficking efforts.
To support tourism, the government built 594 kilometres of access roads leading to key destinations. Authorities also mapped six major tourist spots to integrate them into digital navigation platforms, including GPS and Google Maps.
Private and public investment in regional hospitality expanded over the reporting period, with the construction of 10 eco-lodges and resorts, 77 hotels, and 10 traditional restaurants across the region.
