Addis Ababa | AMECO — Ethiopian Airlines is entering a transformative phase of expansion as rising passenger numbers, fleet expansion, surging revenues, and new international routes drive an urgent need for scaled-up aviation infrastructure.
Widely recognized as Africa’s flagship carrier, the airline transports tens of millions of passengers and hundreds of thousands of tonnes of cargo annually. However, this rapid growth has strained existing facilities at Addis Ababa’s primary airport, reinforcing the imperative for a larger, state-of-the-art global hub.
Bishoftu International Airport: Preparing for the Next Era
The construction of Bishoftu International Airport represents far more than a routine facility upgrade. Developed at an estimated cost of more than $12 billion, the mega-project is designed to solidify Ethiopia’s standing as the continent’s premier transit gateway while stimulating broader economic activity, trade, and tourism.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew noted that relentless demand has pushed current facilities to capacity, making the new mega-hub essential for sustaining the carrier’s future expansion. He emphasized that approximately 22 million international passengers currently fly with the airline each year, underscoring the massive operational volume driving the project.
