Addis Ababa(AMECO)– Student registration for the 2019 academic year has officially opened across Ethiopia’s Amhara region, with education officials declaring all regional schools fully prepared to welcome pupils back to the classroom.
Senior officials from the regional education bureau launched the campaign at Meskerem 16 Primary School in Bahir Dar, calling on parents, local administrators, and religious leaders to ensure every school-age child is enrolled without delay.
Speaking at the launch, the head of the Amhara Region Education Bureau, Tilahun Workneh, confirmed that primary and secondary institutions across all districts have finalized preparations to resume teaching immediately after the registration period closes.
Tilahun emphasized that ensuring children remain in school rather than falling into idleness is a collective societal responsibility. “Keeping children on their educational path is not just a duty for families, but an obligation for the entire community, including religious leaders and local authorities,” he said.
Despite severe economic pressures, parents gathered early at the school in Bahir Dar to register their children, viewing schooling as an essential shield against future uncertainty.
“Even though we are living through economic and personal hardship, interrupting our children’s education would darken their future,” said Enyat Tashager, a mother who joined the queue early in the morning. “Realising this, I made sure to register my children before the deadline passes.”
Another parent, Amlak Worku, framed schooling as the single most vital investment a household can make to build long-term resilience.
“Our highest priority must be our children’s education,” Worku said. “When a child is educated, the family transforms and the country gains hope. Every parent must withstand their current challenges and get their children registered.”
