Addis Ababa (AMECO) — Ethiopia is enhancing its sports infrastructure, with Bahir Dar Stadium set to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches starting next September.
The Ministry of Culture and Sports announced this initiative during a review of the sports sector’s achievements in the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year. Minister of Culture and Sports Shewit Shanka confirmed that intensive preparations are underway to ensure Bahir Dar Stadium meets the necessary standards for the upcoming qualifiers.
The three-day forum will also discuss a study by Jimma University on sports, culture, and the arts, aiming to outline strategic directions for the next three years.
Focus on International-Standard Stadiums
Minister Shewit emphasised Ethiopia’s commitment to developing stadiums that comply with Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards. Upgrading Bahir Dar Stadium is a priority as the country gears up for the AFCON qualifying campaign. The stadium has historically served as a key venue for Ethiopian football and international matches, and its enhancement will bolster Ethiopia’s ability to host continental events outside the capital.
Adey Abeba Stadium Advances
Construction of the Adey Abeba International Stadium in Addis Ababa is progressing while adhering to quality standards. Planned as a major international sporting venue, its playing field has already received FIFA accreditation, scoring 86 percent in a quality assessment conducted in December 2025. With a capacity of 62,000 seats, it will become one of Ethiopia’s largest sporting facilities. The government aims to ensure this stadium and others across the country meet international requirements for major competitions.
Sports Policy Revision
Minister Shewit noted that the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year was pivotal for the sports sector, highlighted by a revision of a sports policy that had been in place for 28 years. The updated policy aims to enhance competitiveness and advance sports development. She also highlighted initiatives to support youth development and expand access to sports facilities, noting that over 45,000 sports facilities are currently available across Ethiopia.
Ethiopia’s Growing Role in International Sport
Ethiopia has hosted numerous continental and international sporting events in the past year, with more scheduled in the future. The minister mentioned that Ethiopia will host the 2027 International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Congress and an anti-doping conference, further solidifying its role in international sports.
