Addis Ababa (AMECO)— Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Government Communication Service (GCS) have declared that Ethiopia has established an “unshakable foundation” for national unity, pointing to indigenous values, nationwide dialogue, and community-led development initiatives as practical solutions to historic social and political divisions.
Marking Pagumen 4—designated as the “Day of Diversity” (የኅብር ቀን)—Abiy said the country is actively shaping its future through inclusive programmes, ranging from the landmark National Dialogue to human-centred urban corridor renewal, widespread volunteerism, and the Green Legacy tree-planting initiative.
“Guided by our philosophy of synergy (Medemer) and by expanding the extraordinary indigenous values passed down through generations, we have laid an unshakable foundation for our firm multinational unity,” Abiy said in an official address. “When we stand together as one, our shared narratives translate into shared success.”
In an accompanying statement issued by the GCS on Pagumen 4, 2018 EC, the government agency framed Ethiopia’s ethnic, religious, cultural, and political diversity not as a point of vulnerability, but as the country’s primary economic and social asset.
The GCS noted that while external adversaries have historically sought to exploit differences to provoke conflict and stall national progress, citizens are now overcoming these fractures through peaceful consultation.
“This generation understands the strength within our diversity,” the GCS statement read. “To build a prosperous Ethiopia, we have resolved to uproot the thorns of division through dialogue and chart our collective destiny together.”
Framing pluralism as a practical mechanism for national problem-solving, the government highlighted several historic and modern collective achievements as proof of unified capability:

The Victory of Adwa (1896): The historic battle where diverse Ethiopian forces defeated an invading colonial power.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD): The self-funded hydroelectric project on the Blue Nile, cited as an example of shared economic and geopolitical self-reliance.

The Green Legacy Initiative: The annual national reforestation program aimed at combating climate change and land degradation.
Abiy emphasised that the overarching goal remains the construction of an inclusive, self-reliant nation anchored in a culture of mutual support, assuring citizens that Ethiopia will continue its trajectory toward shared prosperity.
