Addis Ababa (AMECO)– Voluntary community action grounded in the national philosophy of Medemer (synergy) is driving civic development and social unity across Harari regional state, with local volunteers executing projects spanning housing rehabilitation, healthcare delivery, and environmental protection.
Regional authorities report that the volunteer movement has evolved from individual acts of service into a structured national campaign. Built on principles of collaboration, mutual trust, and shared responsibility, the initiative aims to channel citizen time, skills, and labour directly into addressing localized socio-economic challenges.
Over the past five years, seasonal winter volunteer campaigns in the eastern region have delivered tangible infrastructure and humanitarian improvements. Key achievements include the construction and repair of homes for vulnerable residents, alongside extensive renovations of local primary schools and healthcare facilities.
Environmental and public health efforts have formed a core pillar of the initiative, resulting in the planting of millions of tree seedlings, organized environmental sanitation drives, waste disposal projects, and the provision of free medical care to underserved communities.
Civic participation has extended to targeted social safety nets and educational support. Volunteers have organized community meal-sharing programmes for the elderly and people with disabilities, alongside blood donation drives and the distribution of clothing and hygiene supplies. Educational support has centered on constructing and renovating school buildings, setting up local libraries, and donating essential learning materials to students.
Regional officials confirmed that the current winter campaign is delivering services across 14 distinct sectors, reinforcing long-term sustainable development, social cohesion, and regional growth. The Harari regional government stated it will continue expanding these community-centred development frameworks.
