Construction has officially begun on a 275m Ethiopian birr dry freight terminal in Debre Berhan, an infrastructure investment designed to solidify the city’s position as a expanding industrial hub in the Amhara region.
Spanning 1.6 hectares, the regional government-funded development marks the first terminal of its kind in the region. Construction is scheduled for completion within one year, after which the facility will be equipped to handle up to 1,000 commercial freight vehicles per day.
Dr Gashaw Aweke, head of the Amhara Regional Road Transport and Logistics Bureau, said the project will directly strengthen industrial supply chains and trade across the city. Dr Gashaw urged the municipal administration, private investors, and community members to support the site to enable future expansion phases.
The deputy mayor of Debre Berhan, Bedilu Wubshet, said the groundbreaking delivers on a long-standing demand from local residents and business owners facing logistics bottlenecks. He added that municipal authorities will provide close oversight to ensure the project is delivered on schedule.
