Addis Ababa (AMECO)- Bahir Dar has launched the third phase of a major environmental campaign aimed at tackling urban pollution, enforcing plastic bans, and restoring the lakeside city’s appeal as a key tourist destination.
Speaking at an environmental panel held under the national banner “Clean Ethiopia for Generations”, Teshager Adamu, general manager of the city’s urban and infrastructure department holding deputy mayoral rank, said recent investments in corridor development, public parks, and green spaces were yielding encouraging results.
Adamu warned that local authorities would step up strict legal enforcement alongside public awareness campaigns, targeting both banned, environmentally harmful plastic products and individuals caught illegally dumping waste.
According to Tsigereda Abebe, head of the city administration’s environmental protection, sanitation, and beautification office, the ongoing campaign—which began on 8 July—is designed to make the city healthier and more welcoming for residents and visitors alike. More than 860 organized community associations and service providers are currently engaged in daily operations to collect domestic solid waste and sweep city streets.
Frontline sanitation workers emphasized that community buy-in remains critical to sustaining these gains. Ashenafi Asnakew and Eleni Kenfe, members of local street-cleaning and green development associations who manage daily maintenance of roads, drainage ditches, and public gardens, called on residents to take direct ownership of their local environment.
City administration officials concluded that active public participation and coordinated cooperation among all stakeholders will be essential if Bahir Dar is to consolidate its status as a premier regional tourism hub.
