Addis Ababa, (AMECO) — Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) hardliners are pushing for renewed armed conflict, threatening the fragile peace established under the 2022 Pretoria agreement.
According to reports published by the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), senior TPLF figures, including Debretsion Gebremichael and Fetlework Gebregziabher, have conducted public mobilisation drives across the region to prepare for political and military confrontation with federal authorities.
ENA quoted the TPLF leadership as declaring: ‘Now that our preparations are complete, we will begin our work from the gates of Addis Ababa alongside our allies.’
ENA report assert that while the federal government adhered to its commitments under the Pretoria deal, TPLF hardliners used the postwar period to secretly rearm and reorganise. ENA further claimed that the group is attempting to forge tactical alignments with former adversaries in Asmara as well as other anti-government forces operating inside Ethiopia and abroad. Analysts cited by ENA warn that any resurgence of conflict in northern Ethiopia risks destabilising the wider Horn of Africa, threatening critical supply corridors and deepening humanitarian pressures.
Observers cited in the reports have called on international bodies, including the United Nations and the African Union, to exert direct diplomatic pressure and consider targeted sanctions against figures attempting to sabotage the peace process.
