Ethio Telecom and Amhara Revenue Bureau Partner to Digitalise Tax Collection
Bahir Dar, (AMECO) — Ethio Telecom and the Amhara Regional State Revenue Bureau have signed a contractual agreement to digitalize regional tax collection, enabling citizens to pay their taxes remotely using the Telebirr mobile money platform.
The initiative is designed to eliminate long waiting times and streamline administrative processes for taxpayers across the region.
Transaction Growth and Network Expansion
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ethio Telecom’s Chief Mobile Money Officer, Biruk Adhana, noted that the platform will enhance service efficiency and overall customer satisfaction. He disclosed that Telebirr has grown to serve over 60 million subscribers, processing a cumulative transaction volume of 9 trillion ETB since its rollout.
Ethio Telecom’s Chief Enterprise Officer, Yohannes Getahun, emphasized that national economic transformation relies heavily on digitalising public finance systems. He highlighted the telecom operator’s ongoing expansion of 4G and 5G network coverage across the Amhara region to support enterprise solutions and public infrastructure.
University Collaboration Powers eTAS App
To facilitate the digital transition, Bahir Dar University collaborated with the Regional Revenue Bureau to build the electronic Tax Administration System (eTAS) application, which is now integrated with Telebirr.
Dr. Mengesha Ayene, President of Bahir Dar University, explained that the software integration modernizes local revenue workflows by linking academic technical innovation directly with public sector needs.
Revenue Performance and Anti-Corruption Measures
Dr. Mengesha Fentaw, Head of the Amhara Regional Revenue Bureau, announced that the bureau collected 90 billion ETB during the 2018 Ethiopian Fiscal Year (EFY 2018 / 2025–2026 GC).
He credited the eTAS platform and its Telebirr integration with establishing a transparent, equitable, and efficient collection mechanism that actively deters bureaucratic malpractice. Dr. Fentaw urged Ethio Telecom to maintain its technical support as both institutions expand their partnership in upcoming fiscal cycles.
