Addis Ababa, 05 November 2026.—The Ethiopian national flag has been hoisted in the historic city of Harar on a 52-meter flagpole, the tallest in East Africa.
The flag-raising ceremony took place in the presence of Harari Regional President Ordin Bedri, senior regional leaders, and security officials.
President Ordin said the flagpole, erected at a high altitude in Harar, ranks first in both height and length in Ethiopia and East Africa. The national flag of Ethiopia and the flag of the Harari Region, each measuring 72 square meters, were raised on it.
Describing the flag as an expression of shared pride, Pan-Africanism, sovereignty, and freedom that gathers the people under a single shade, the President stressed the need to promote the principles of flag dignity in order to strengthen these values and shared narratives.
The flagpole stands on Mt. Hakim in Harar, at an altitude of 2,900 meters above sea level. Located beside the city’s iconic “HARAR” landmark sign, it is expected to further raise the prominence and visibility of the flag’s symbolic value.
