In a world where political ties alone no longer carry a nation far, Ethiopia is betting on economic diplomacy. Its electricity already reaches Sudan, Djibouti and Kenya, and its BRICS membership has opened new doors, all without leaning on any single partner.
Under what the government calls “Medemer diplomacy,” Ethiopia is building its foreign policy on national interest, mutual respect and results-oriented engagement. The approach puts economic diplomacy at its center: attracting foreign investment, expanding exports, bringing in digital, renewable energy and agricultural technologies, supplying GERD-generated power to its neighbors, and supporting the African Continental Free Trade Area. By keeping sovereignty intact and its partnerships balanced,Ethiopia has strengthened its voice and bargaining power internationally while tying its own development and peace aspirations to those of the region and the wider world.
In a rapidly shifting global political and economic order, safeguarding national interests, securing regional peace and accelerating sustainable development are the core aims of any foreign policy.
Drawing on its historical, political and geostrategic standing in East Africa and across the African continent, Ethiopia has found it necessary to adjust its foreign policy to the realities of the present global moment.
Built on Medemer values, Ethiopia’s foreign policy carries forward past good practices, corrects shortcomings and looks ahead to future opportunities. The strategy is centered on the national interest, balanced, geared toward mutual benefit, and paired with a results-oriented approach.
National sovereignty, the security of the people and economic growth are the fundamental yardsticks for every diplomatic negotiation and relationship. Ethiopia’s stance in its foreign relations does not rest on dependence on any single partner. It follows a comprehensive, balanced diplomatic course, which has strengthened the country’s voice and bargaining power in international forums.
Our country is putting into practice a diplomacy that upholds its dignity, affirming its right to defend its national interest through its own decisions, free from any foreign pressure or interference.
Medemer diplomacy is a strategy of engaging the international community on the principles of mutual respect and equality, without surrendering national sovereignty. Because political ties alone are no longer enough in modern diplomacy, economic diplomacy has become a principal pillar of the Medemer government’s foreign policy.
Ethiopia is pursuing extensive diplomatic activity to attract foreign direct investment, boost exports and open new market opportunities. The homegrown economic reforms under way, together with the opening of the financial sector, have created a favorable environment for foreign investors.
Through agreements with developed countries and international institutions, strategic work is under way to bring digital economy, artificial intelligence, renewable energy and agricultural technologies into the country.
The construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and East Africa’s power interconnection are clear demonstrations of this strategy, with Ethiopia supplying renewable electricity to Sudan, Djibouti and Kenya.
As a nurturer of the Pan-African spirit and a symbol of African freedom, Ethiopia gives its efforts for the unity and progress of the continent a special place in the Medemer policy. By supporting and implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, it is actively helping Africans benefit from their own resources and markets.
Ethiopia’s membership in BRICS is a great historic milestone that has strengthened its diplomatic and economic capacity. By broadening its multilateral diplomacy, it will allow the country to draw significant benefit from South-South cooperation.
By moving Ethiopia’s foreign policy beyond traditional and past political partisanship, the Medemer government has opened a new chapter founded on the national interest, shared benefit and a results-oriented strategy.
By continuing to strengthen this balanced and modern diplomatic course, Ethiopia will ensure lasting results by aligning its own development and peace aspirations with those of the region and the wider international community.
