Addis Ababa ( AMECO)- Debre Markos is experiencing an economic and industrial revival following improvements in regional security, according to the city’s deputy mayor, Teshome Wale.
Speaking on the city’s development prospects, Teshome noted that past security challenges had previously driven investors away and suppressed investment revenue. However, a return to stability has revived the sector, with 222 manufacturing investors currently operating in the municipal administration.
Among the key drivers is the Magna Teff ( แแ แคแ) Processing plant, which helps local farmers profit while exporting teff to generate foreign currency. The deputy mayor highlighted that through the “Ethiopia Tamirt” (Let Ethiopia Produce) movement, industries that had previously halted operations due to security issues have resumed work, while new projects and construction are actively being encouraged.
The revival is further supported by the operationalisation of the King Tekle Haymanot Airport, which has stimulated local commerce, hotel bookings, and investment activity. Teshome emphasised that investment requires reliable peace, and efforts are underway to foster sustainable security by treating the public as a stakeholder in peacebuilding.
To sustain this growth, the city administration is implementing technology-driven administrative reforms to streamline services for incoming investors, addressing previous bureaucratic bottlenecks and aiming to make Debre Markos a hub for mining, agro-processing, and tourism.
