Addis Ababa (AMECO)- Ethiopia is shifting its rural development strategy towards a human-centred “corridor” initiative, prioritising direct improvements in living standards over the simple construction of physical infrastructure.
Under the framework, project success will be measured by tangible transformations in people’s daily lives rather than the volume of built structures alone. The strategy combines infrastructure improvements with targeted social and economic support, aiming to boost regional connectivity, enhance living conditions, and unlock commercial opportunities across rural communities.
A core objective of the corridor model is overcoming severe resource fragmentation. By consolidating scattered economic and agricultural assets into interconnected development belts, the initiative aims to build self-sustaining, productive rural hubs that remain attractive places to live and work.
By integrating housing, transport, and economic planning into a single framework, the initiative addresses long-standing challenges of rural isolation, offering a potential blueprint for sustainable community development across the Horn of Africa.
