Bahir Dar, (AMECO) – Amhara region recorded positive economic performance over the past fiscal year despite ongoing operational challenges, according to regional chief administrator Arega Kebede.
Presenting the performance report for the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year (2025/26) to the 12th regular session of the sixth regional council, Arega outlined key government initiatives focused on boosting productivity, curbing inflation, expanding employment, and increasing export trade.
He attributed the economic momentum to the implementation of the national homegrown economic policy, administrative dedication, and long-term development planning.
Addressing the rising cost of living remained a central priority for the regional government, with targeted measures bringing local inflation down to 8%, Arega reported.
The reduction was achieved by:
-
Increasing agricultural yields
-
Streamlining trade supply chains
-
Introducing targeted government subsidies and tax reforms
-
Strengthening the operational capacity of local manufacturing industries
On employment, regional job-creation programmes across urban and rural sectors generated permanent and temporary work for more than 1.3 million citizens, primarily through the establishment of small and medium enterprises.
International trade performance also expanded over the reporting period, driven by product diversification and quality control measures that helped boost export volume and foreign exchange earnings across key sectors.
