Addis Ababa, (AMECO) — Ethiopia and Azerbaijan have signaled a shared ambition to deepen strategic ties and broaden bilateral cooperation following talks between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijan’s parliament, the Milli Majlis.

The high-level discussions, held in the Ethiopian capital, focused on identifying new avenues for mutual economic growth and expanding diplomatic engagement between East Africa and the South Caucasus.

In a statement published on social media following the meeting, Abiy described the dialogue as productive, emphasizing a mutual commitment to long-term collaboration.

“We engaged in productive discussions on strengthening our bilateral relations, building on a shared commitment to a deeper strategic partnership and mutual growth,” the Prime Minister stated.

The diplomatic engagement reflects wider efforts by both nations to diversify international partnerships, with a focus on institutional knowledge-sharing, trade, and regional development.

As part of her official itinerary in Addis Ababa, Gafarova also held a separate bilateral session with Tagesse Chafo, Speaker of Ethiopia’s House of People’s Representatives.

The parliamentary talks centered on strengthening inter-legislative dialogue and establishing institutional frameworks to support broader bilateral agreements negotiated at the executive level.
