Ethiopia Launches National Winter Volunteer Health Campaign Aimed at 20 Million Citizens

Addis Ababa, (AMECO)— The Ministry of Health, in partnership with St. Peter’s Specialized Hospital, has launched a nationwide winter (Kiremt) volunteer health initiative to deliver free medical care and counseling to millions of citizens across Ethiopia.

More than 30 public and private healthcare institutions are participating in the charitable campaign.

Expanded Access to Advanced Diagnostics and Surgery

Speaking at the launch event, Dr. Abreham Eshete, CEO of St. Peter’s Specialized Hospital, stated that the facility is fulfilling its social responsibility by extending high-level medical services to vulnerable communities free of charge.

• Target Reach: St. Peter’s Hospital alone plans to treat over 120,000 patients during the campaign.

• Scope of Services: Free coverage encompasses advanced diagnostic testing, preventive health counseling, and major surgical procedures.

Focus on Preventive Care and Community Solidarity

Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba highlighted the initiative as a vital reflection of national solidarity, emphasizing that volunteerism allows healthcare professionals to give back to their communities.

“Winter volunteer service is a platform for us to support one another and demonstrate compassion,” Dr. Mekdes said. “It offers our medical professionals a unique opportunity to serve the public with renewed dedication.”

Dr. Mekdes noted that early screenings and free consultations will enable timely disease detection and foster a proactive health culture among citizens.

Nationwide, the Ministry of Health aims to extend free health services to 20 million people throughout the season. Dr. Mekdes urged both public and private healthcare facilities across the country to actively join the humanitarian campaign.
