Addressing the progress of the landmark process, Professor Mesfin stated that the dialogue is strengthening and advancing into a pivotal stage. Deliberations have shifted to 500-member plenary groups, which are currently considering consolidated proposals compiled from earlier 250-member sessions by a dedicated 30-member drafting team. Three to four thematic agenda groups have already begun discussions at this level, with the remaining groups scheduled to join them by tomorrow.<\/p>\n
Responding to reports of heated exchanges during earlier sessions, Professor Mesfin described the friction as a natural and expected element of any inclusive national dialogue. He noted that discussions\u2014which originated in micro-groups of ten delegates\u2014have progressively matured, with participants increasingly setting aside individual and group interests in favour of shared national priorities.<\/p>\n
The Chief Commissioner firmly rejected reports suggesting that decisions were being imposed through majority voting or external and internal political pressure, describing such claims as unfounded. He clarified that the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission holds no mandate to issue binding decisions. Instead, its legal role is strictly advisory: to facilitate the preparation of comprehensive recommendations that will assist legislative, executive, political, and religious institutions in addressing key national challenges.<\/p>\n
Emphasising the diversity of the assembly, Professor Mesfin noted that the 4,000 delegates\u2014ranging from government ministers to farmers and pastoralists\u2014represent the sentiments of Ethiopia\u2019s estimated 120 to 130 million citizens. To preserve order and mutual respect, the commission is enforcing a strict code of conduct prohibiting the suppression, shaming, or belittling of participants’ views. A formal grievance mechanism, supported by senior experts, has also been established to resolve emerging disputes in direct consultation with political parties and religious leaders.<\/p>\n
Once the discussion phase involving all 4,000 participants wraps up over the next one to two weeks, the commission will aggregate the compiled proposals into a final report.
