Addis Ababa, (AMECO)<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) has allocated more than 40 million Ethiopian birr (\u00a3260,000) and deployed 22,000 employees to support the country\u2019s single-day push to plant 800 million tree seedlings under the national Green Legacy Initiative.<\/p>\n
Led by bank president Abe Sano, staff across the country participated under the corporate campaign slogan “Seedlings in Our Hands, Trillions Through Our Work.”<\/i> The effort represents one of the largest single-day corporate mobilisations by a financial institution in Sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\nLinking Financial Risk to Ecosystem Recovery<\/b><\/h3>\n
Speaking during the planting event, Sano framed environmental restoration not as discretionary corporate philanthropy, but as a core economic imperative for the financial sector.<\/p>\n
“Restoring forest resources is essential to ensuring fertile land and safeguarding the wellbeing of both present and future generations,” Sano said, noting that environmental degradation directly threatens agricultural yields, rural commerce, and broader economic stability.<\/p>\n
In an economy heavily reliant on rain-fed agriculture, soil erosion and watershed depletion pose systemic risks to credit portfolios and food security. By directing institutional capital and labor toward reforestation, the country’s largest bank is seeking to demonstrate how state-owned enterprises can integrate ecological risk mitigation into their operating models.<\/p>\n
A central tenet of solutions-oriented environmental reporting is examining how institutions address execution hurdles\u2014specifically the long-term maintenance of planted stock. While mass-planting drives generate high initial momentum, past regional initiatives have often suffered from low seedling survival rates due to poor post-planting care.<\/p>\n
Addressing this operational challenge, Sano stressed that the financial commitment must be matched by sustained post-care management to ensure high sapling retention and long-term ecological impact.<\/p>\n
According to CBE Corporate Communication Director Alsen Assefa, the bank\u2019s environmental strategy extends beyond seasonal campaigns. Over the past decade, the institution has planted millions of seedlings while embedding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria into its broader institutional mandate.<\/p>\n
