Addis Ababa, (AMECO)<\/em>–An alleged human trafficking kingpin has been extradited from Malawi to Ethiopia following a joint international operation involving Interpol and local law enforcement, police have confirmed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The suspect, Adnew Bashaw, was transferred to Ethiopian custody on July 29 after his arrest in Malawi, state-affiliated news agency ENA reported. He faces trial over claims he orchestrated a transnational network that systematically exploited Ethiopian migrants bound for South Africa through extortion, torture, and forced smuggling routes.<\/p>\n

According to the Ethiopian Federal Police (EFP), investigators gathered witness testimonies and documentary records showing that Adnew\u2019s network targeted young people in the Central Ethiopia Regional State, particularly across the Hadiya and Kembata zones. Promising lucrative overseas employment, the syndicate lured victims into illegal southern migration channels.<\/p>\n

Systemic extortion and dangerous routes<\/h2>\n

Police records indicate the network extorted between 600,000 and 800,000 Birr (\u00a33,300\u2013\u00a34,400) per victim, demanding an upfront non-refundable deposit of at least 100,000 Birr transferred via local bank accounts prior to departure.<\/p>\n

Migrants were smuggled across the Kenyan border via Moyale and hidden in the Gambo forest under severe conditions, including extreme food and water deprivation. Victims were subsequently forced to traverse the Chalbi Desert on foot and by motorbike under threat of violence.<\/p>\n

Upon reaching Nairobi, migrants were held hostage in covert safehouses where traffickers tortured them to extract additional ransoms from their families. Methods included physical beatings, execution threats, and electric shocks, forcing families in Ethiopia to transfer further sums exceeding 100,000 Birr to local proxies.<\/p>\n

Abandoned in transit<\/h2>\n

From Nairobi, victims were packed into cargo containers, trailers, and flatbed trucks bound for Mombasa and Tanzania. Police documented that many migrants were abandoned in remote wilderness areas along the route and failed to reach South Africa.<\/p>\n

Intercepted by regional authorities, dozens faced illegal entry charges in transit countries, serving prison sentences of up to three years and paying fines reaching 170,000 Birr before deportation back to Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

Following a multi-year intelligence tracking operation launched during the 2022\/23 fiscal year alongside Interpol, Malawian law enforcement apprehended Adnew before handing him over to federal officers.
