Bahir Dar, June 19, 2033(AMECO) – The Amhara identity of East Telemt people, like that of the Wolkait and Raya, had been usurped. During its three decades of rule, the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) violently removed the Amhara identity of Telemt, Wolkait, and Raya people.
The language, culture and other aspects of those communities had been altered. East Telemt had been a war torn area during the two years northern Ethiopia war. In a peaceful demonstration conducted residents of the area requested an urgent response regarding the legal recognition for their Amhara identity.
Residents of Telemt are currently enjoying their independence after a long battle that required enormous sacrifice throughout the war. During the peaceful march, the residents posed numerous concerns and sent messages to the federal government and the international community.
In addition to an immediate legal recognition for their Amhara identity, they have asked the government to reconstruct institutions which have been destroyed in the war and deliver them humanitarian aid.
Residents of Eastern Telemt, religious leaders, zonal and district administration officials and workers, members of the indigenous associations of Telemt living abroad, and others participated in the rally.
