Bahir Dar, August 21 – (AMECO) The ongoing restoration of Emperor Fasil’s Palace is drawing widespread acclaim. This ambitious work, initiated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, aims to preserve the historical integrity of this iconic site while preserving its structure for future generations.

The head of peace and security office of the Amhara region, Ato Desalegn Tasew recently visited the restoration site. He expressed high praise for the federal government’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the palace’s historical form and content. According to Desalegn, the restoration is a testament to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s commitment to revitalizing Ethiopia’s rich cultural and historical heritages.

“These aged and unfruitful construction projects within and around the city of Gondar, like asphalt roads and the Megech Dam, have been halted due to circumstances such as, poor administrations and inappropriate design. Currently following PM Abiy Ahmed’s initiatives, the revitalization works are underway, and these restoration and revitalization efforts have mobilized the community.

Ato Desalegn remarked that this restoration work is a significant contribution to Ethiopia’s historical preservation.

“The ongoing maintenance is not just about repairing old walls; it’s about safeguarding a piece of history that Gondar and all of Africa possess and hold dear.”

During his visit, Desalegn also highlighted Gondar’s historic role as a central hub for African trade and social relations. He stressed the importance of nurturing and respecting this cultural legacy, so it remains as decended for future generations.

In addition to the palace restoration, Desalegn inspected the Azezo Patriots Square road project and the Megeche dam project—initiatives that have recently received attention from the Prime Minister following community feedback.

The restoration efforts at Emperor Fasil’s Palace are complemented by other significant developments in the area, including enhancements to the piazza corridor and the ongoing roadwork. These projects are part of a broader federal initiative to modernize Gondar while honoring its historical roots.

Regional leaders, including Dr. Gashaw Awoke, head of the Amhara regional road office, and Mr. Zewdu Malede, the regional transport and logistics director, were present during the visit. They echoed the sentiment that these projects are crucial for preserving the region’s historical significance and improving local infrastructure.

As these restoration and development projects continue, they promise not only to enhance the city’s physical landscape but also to enrich its cultural legacy. This effort is a profound reminder of the importance of preserving history while embracing progress.
