Green Legacy creates new wave in East Africa

Bahir Dar, June 25, 2023 (AMECO) – Ethiopia’s success in implementing the Green Legacy Initiative, serves as the source of inspiration for other East African to execute similar greenery campaigns, according South Sudanese  Foreign Minister.

Approached by The Ethiopian Herald, South the Minister Deng Dau Malek said that the initiative, which was driven by Prime Minster Abiy Ahmed (PhD), encourages other East African nations to turn their face to natural conservation.

South Sudan admires the commitment of the Ethiopian government and its success in excelling the plan set to plant 25 billion seedlings. “As the world now is moving towards desertification, the green legacy initiative is a timely move to protect the environment. As the desert is coming up, we must prevent land degradation.”

Mentioning the low contribution of Africa and other developing countries for pollution, the minister highlighted that they are immensely affected by industry-caused climate change. “In East Africa, the drought affected so many places, but if you go to my country, South Sudan, you get a flood that submerges six states out of ten. So, people reside in the dry and wet areas have been affected by the latter. There is no way better than working together and see how we can improve our region.”

One of the things that the East African countries have talked about is getting the environment back to being able to sustain the population and the ecosystem in which people can live together.

Commending donor agencies contribution in humanitarian response in East Africa, the FM said; however, that the region should move away from this dependency syndrome.

It was recalled that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) launched recently the second phase of the Green Legacy Initiative.

“Let’s plant our future today, is the theme for the second phase which following a successful first phase in which we planted 25 billion seedlings,” Abiy twitted.
