Ethiopia set a new global record yesterday by planting over 500 million seedlings in under 12 hours – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD).
Bahir Dar, July 18, 2023 (AMECO) – Apart from breaking its own 2019 global record, Ethiopia shattered world record planting 566,971,600 million seedlings in just 12 hours yesterday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) announced.
The 2nd round greening campaign was officially launched by premier Abiy and First Lady Zinash Tayachew planting apple seedlings together with staff of the Office of the Prime Minister (PMO) and Persons with Disabilities(PWDs) yesterday ‘s morning.
Government Communication Service (GCS) State Minister, Selamawit Kassa also announced that millions of Ethiopians including Prime Minister and his cabinets, Civil Society Organization members, diplomatic communities residing in Ethiopia as well as the public at large were actively engaged in the campaign.
During the first round of the initiative, Ethiopia planted 350 million seedlings in 12 hours and owned the world record of planting the massive number of seedlings in such record –breaking environmental drive.
The campaign was initiated by PMO with plan of breaking own record. And it is also a part of Government’s Green Legacy Initiative Second Phase introduced this year across the country, it was learnt.
On the day, the PMO also shared pictures of the prime minister while he planting trees in several places during the campaign.
On his tweeter, Abiy (PhD) has also announced that the target of the “500 million in 12 hours’ is to develop planting culture and to break the world record owned by Ethiopia itself. In his second planting for the day, the Prime Minister also planted seedlings with elementary and high school students in Yeka Mountains, Addis Ababa.
The green Legacy Initiative was commenced in 2019 by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD). The initiative is aimed to restore the forest coverage of Ethiopia nationwide.
