Bahir Dar, August 16 (AMECO)-Located majestically in the heart of the Amhara region of Ethiopia, Chokie Mountain stands as a testament to the rich natural heritage of East Africa. Rising to an impressive altitude of 4100 meters above sea level, this mountain is not just a geographical landmark but a vital hub of ecological significance.
Chokie Mountain is renowned for its abundance of water resources. It boasts an impressive network of 270 springs, which dot its slopes and valleys, providing essential freshwater to the surrounding region. From its heights, 59 rivers originate, flowing gracefully through the Ethiopian landscape and nourishing the land along their paths. Notably, Chokie Mountain contributes significantly to the water supply of the world’s longest river, the Blue Nile locally known as Abay providing up to 20% of its flow.
The biodiversity of Chokie Mountain is a marvel in itself. This mountain is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, 16 distinct mamals and 41 indigenous bird species exist gracing its skies. These avian residents add both color and melody to the mountain’s serene landscape.
The vegetation on Chokie Mountain includes numerous indigenous plant species, more than 85 indigenous plant species are discovered, many of which holding significant medicinal value. These plants have been used for generations by local communities, offering remedies and treatments for various ailments, reflecting the deep connection between nature and culture in the region.
Beyond its ecological importance, mount Chokie holds cultural significance for the people of the Amhara region. It is a place where traditions intertwine with natural wonders, forming a tapestry of heritage that underscores the importance of preserving such environments for future generations.
Chokie Mountain, the roof of Gojjam and the water tower of East Africa encompasses 53,558 hectares of mountainous landscapes, attaching 9 woreda administrations in the East and West Gojjam zones of the Amhara region.
Chokie’s stunning natural landscapes offer breathtaking views of mountains and valleys. It is a Majestic Landmark at the heart of Gojjam. Its natural beauty provides opportunities for outdoor recreation, hiking, and eco-tourism, attracting nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

This marvelous nature is found 40kms away from the historical city of D/Markos. Sinan woreda and the town of Erebu Gebeya Lies on the road to mout Chokie.

Efforts towards the conservation of Chokie Mountain are crucial in safeguarding its diverse ecosystems and ensuring sustainable use of its resources. Local initiatives and conservation projects aim to protect the mountain’s biodiversity while promoting responsible tourism and community engagement.
Mulu ecology has been working voluntarily for the past few years, to help the community gain additional income through promoting and attracting visitors to the area.

The World Tourism Organization (WTO), a UN specialized agency, has named Choke Mountains Ecovillage in Ethiopia among the Best Tourism Villages in 2022.
WTO named the ecovillage as one of the best tourism villages due to its driving force for rural development by protecting cultural and natural resources, traditions and community-based values, tourism products and lifestyles and promoting and developing economic, social and environmental issues in all sectors.
In essence, Chokie Mountain embodies the harmonious relationship between humanity and nature, offering a glimpse into the intricate balance that sustains life on our planet.
