Amhara state to plant 260 mln saplings in 12 hours
Bahir Dar, July 13, 2023 (AMECO) -As a part of the national greening campaign, Amhara State Agriculture Bureau announced that 260 million seedlings will be planted in just 12-hour on 17 July, 2023.
Speaking to The Ethiopian Herald, Bureau Deputy Head Almaz Giziew (PhD) said that 1.6 billion seedlings have been nurtured [till now] and will be planted this rainy season.
“Our plan was to nurture 1.7 billion seedlings. However, the amount of saplings that are ready to be planted are about 1.63 billion and we will manage to plant 260 million trees on the national greenery campaign day,” she said.
For the July 17 campaign, preoperational works including plantation area selection and digging the planting holes have already been completed. All Zonal and Woreda administrations are also actively facilitating the campaign, she stated.
The tree planting campaign would be checked and evaluated using map and mobile applications. Accordingly, officials and experts can easily access the performance of the campaign and the condition of the plants, she noticed.Economically important trees have also been prepared to be planted on degraded areas of the state, it was learnt.
Over the past years, the state has planted about six billion seedlings, she said.
Nationwide, 500 million seedlings will be planted only in 12 hours, scheduled for the upcoming July 17, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) announced recently.
In a message he delivered, in connection with the Green Legacy Initiative recently, Prime Minister Abiy recalled the achievement in planting 350 million seedlings a day, urged the public to smash their own record by planting 500 million.
