Alibaba Group is to Launch E-Commerce Platform in Ethiopia

Bahir Dar, August 22, 2024 (AMECO) Alibaba Group  officially announced it is set to launch e-commerce operations in Ethiopia, marking a significant milestone for the country’s digital economy.

The announcement was made during a forum where Alibaba Group unveiled its new venture in collaboration with Ethiopian Airlines and the Ethiopian Digital Transformation Association.

Dr. Yishrun Alemayehu, Minister of State for Innovation and Technology, praised the launch, noting that it reflects the successful efforts to attract international e-commerce and foster a supportive environment for digital innovation and economic growth in Ethiopia. He emphasized that Ethiopia’s adoption of Alibaba’s digital tools demonstrates its potential to become a key player in the global digital economy.

Tewodros Ayalew, e-commerce logistics service manager at Ethiopian Airlines, highlighted that the airline has established a hub to support Alibaba’s logistics needs, enhancing the efficiency of e-commerce operations in the country.

Jeffrey Jiang, Business Director at Ali Express, stated, “Ali Express brings its global e-commerce expertise to connect Ethiopian consumers and businesses.”

Fiker Andargachew, President of the Ethiopian Digital Transformation Association, noted that the association is collaborating with key stakeholders to boost the effectiveness of Ethiopia’s digital transformation efforts, adding that the entry of major e-commerce players like Alibaba will significantly enhance the sector’s efficiency.

According to a social media update from the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, Fiker Andargachew emphasized that Alibaba’s entry into the Ethiopian market will play a crucial role in advancing the country’s e-commerce sector.
