Bahir Dar, June 21, 2033(AMECO) -Yelkal Kefale (Dr.) met with French Ambassador Rémi Maréchaux and the EU envoy to Ethiopia Stefan Lock (Dr.).  During the meeting, they discussed on the need to jointly support the agricultural work of the Amhara region’s war-damaged areas and the long-term restoration of the rock hewn church of Lalibela.

The chief asserted that France and the other European nations had a long history of close ties with the Amhara region. The roch hewn churches of Lalibela received assistance by France in particular when it was in danger, according to Yilkal. The heritage is still under peril, and it needs to be protected with the aid of scientific study, he added.

The region, according to the head, is working hard to restore the war-damaged facilities and settle the people in a long-term manner. He urged the French government and the European Union to offer the assistance required to advance quickly and create a durable peace in this regard.

Rémi Maréchaux, the French ambassador to Ethiopia, stated that 18 thousand quintals of improved seeds will be distributed to Amhara region war-affected areas. He further added that during his visit, he spoke with farmers in the Farta district of the South Gondar zone. He stated that they decided that they would supply improved seeds to farmers in order to boost their output.

The ambassador stated that a scientific research will be conducted in partnership with the Ethiopian Heritage Protection Authority and presented to UNESCO in order to provide further and permanent upkeep to the rock hewn churches of Lalibela.

Dr. Stefan Lock, the European Union’s envoy in Ethiopia, stated that the Union supports the Amhara region’s efforts to restore the devastated infrastructure. He applauded the government’s efforts to bring about long-term peace and emphasized that the European Union will provide the necessary help through its development agencies.
