Bahir Dar, June 20, 2023(AMECO) – Nile water is currently on the global political and diplomatic agenda. Despite the fact that water research centers and institutions of higher learning have addressed numerous difficulties concerning the equitable use of the water, no long-term solution has been established.
Shafiqul Islam, professor of civil and environmental engineering at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Director of Water Diplomacy at Tufts University in Boston, USA, stated, “International water accords are not adequately handled; “The best thing is cooperation and goodwill.”

According to the professor’s detailed examination, the attitude of cooperation and communication is a highly essential notion, particularly in light of the present-day discussion around the iconic Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
According to Professor Shafiqul Islam, while the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam will ensure the country’s long-term economic development and energy needs, Ethiopia’s efforts have resulted in a lot of tension with downstream countries, notably Egypt.
Professor Islam, who believes Egypt wants a formal accord to manage the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam development process and water filling, claims Egypt’s approach contradicts the three countries’ 2015 agreement and the international water treaty.

According to the hydrologist, Ethiopia’s dam on the Nile River is regarded a sovereign right to use the river inside its territory, and international rules cannot violate this right.
He said Ethiopia is under no duty to execute binding agreements with Egypt.
According to the hydrologist, Ethiopia is building the dam to gain access to power.
According to Professor Shafiqul Islam, this demonstrates Ethiopia’s resolve to maintain its economic progress and move independently. He also claims that it is acceptable in light of international law and the interests of the neighboring nations.

He stated that Ethiopia’s good position in terms of cooperation stems from a mature approach that adheres to the law.
